Google open-sources Gemma, Midjourney on X?, Reddit’s AI deal

Elon Musk has big plans for X.

Hello, Starters!

It's just not a typical Thursday, especially if you're doing a deep dive into the world of AI news since the morning like me. I'll save you the hard work and share with you the most exciting bits.

Here’s what you’ll find today:

  • Google turns to open source with Gemma

  • Elon Musk teases a partnership with Midjourney

  • Reddit allegedly reached an AI deal with Google

  • CEOs of OpenAI and Intel discuss the need for AI chips

  • Samsung brings AI to more devices

  • And more.

Google has surprised everyone with the unveiling of Gemma, an open source AI model developed by DeepMind and powered by Gemini's capabilities. Through Gemma, the company aims to provide developers and researchers with accessible, enhanced models to foster responsible AI development.

This new model comes in two sizes: Gemma-2B and Gemma-7B, and it is optimised for multiple AI hardware platforms, including Nvidia's GPUs. Although it's not multimodal like Gemini, its overall performance surpasses similar open models such as LLaMA 2 and Mistral-7B. Google has stated that they have taken safety measures to ensure Gemma's reliability.

During a live broadcast on X Spaces, Elon Musk said he's been in ongoing talks to add Midjourney's generative AI capabilities to the social media app through a partnership. While details are currently limited, the CEO is eager to bring generative AI to X one way or another.

This move isn't entirely unexpected, given that one of Musk's main goals for X is to turn it into an "everything app." If the partnership happens, it would set the platform apart from competitors with its AI features, especially considering the existing integration of the Grok chatbot.

As previously reported, Reddit was in discussions to make its content available for AI training; however, there was no knowledge of which company was behind the deal. Multiple sources now point to Google as the chosen one, with the contract estimated at $60 million per year.

Many prominent companies are seeking data to train their AI models, often partnering with media outlets. Reddit would be a significant source due to the substantial amount of material shared by users, some of whom express discontent with the deal.

💥Pat Gelsinger and Sam Altman recently sat down to discuss ways to address the current AI chip shortage and the need for better strategies to balance supply and demand. Altman emphasised that a "global investment" is necessary as AI continues to reshape the industry.

📱Samsung has announced plans to roll out its Galaxy AI features to more users through a software update scheduled for the end of March. The devices set to receive an AI boost include the Galaxy S23 series, S23 FE, Z Fold5, and Z Flip5, along with a few of its tablet lineup.
