Robots really thrive with AI!

Hello, Starters!

Before long, there will be general-purpose robots walking around in places near you. But until that day arrives, let's dive into how this aspect of technology is greatly influenced by the AI boom.

Here’s what you’ll find today:

  • xAI presents Grok 1.5 Vision

  • Sanctuary AI & Magna join forces for robot deployment

  • Google Research introduces “Infini-attention”

  • DeepMind’s groundbreaking soccer bot

  • Meta is trialling a new AI chatbot

  • And more.

xAI continues to boost Grok's capabilities, this time with an upgrade that allows it to process visual information efficiently, giving the model a better understanding of the physical world.

With this version, Grok-1.5 Vision can analyse documents, diagrams, graphics, screenshots, and photos, providing users with reasonable answers to their queries. To showcase Grok's growth, xAI has tested it across various benchmarks, demonstrating its competitiveness with current multimodal models.

General-purpose robots are poised to improve several fields in the future, with manufacturing being one of the areas where they are expected to optimise processes the most. That's why Sanctuary AI's latest partnership with Magna, one of the largest automotive suppliers in the world, doesn't come as a surprise, but rather as a reaffirmation of the transformative potential of robotics when combined with AI.

The goal of this collaboration is to increase the deployment of Sanctuary AI's robots while also refining the technology to make it suitable for demanding manufacturing settings and promoting its adoption in the industrial sector.

A recent research paper by Google highlights significant advancements in extending the context window of large language models through a method called "Infini-attention." This method involves retaining the traditional attention layer found in transformer models, which focuses on relevant data while incorporating a "compressive memory" to optimise computational resources.

With this technique, researchers aim to maintain the quality of results without the need for additional memory when handling larger contexts.
