Hugging Face personalised Assistants, MIT & IBM’s AI for maths, Apple embraces AI

Is Apple finally catching up with the race?

Time to explore the AI updates!

Hola Starters! This is Sthefania from Spain, and today I’ll be bringing you up to speed with the biggest news in AI since Friday!

If you’re new here, welcome to StarterAI, a daily newsletter helping devs around the world, and anyone who’s eager to learn more about AI. Tell your friends!

Here’s what you’ll find today:

  • Hugging Face launches an AI assistant maker

  • MIT and IBM revolutionize maths with AI

  • Apple’s big AI announcement is coming

  • AI chip demand forces Huawei to change its focus

  • Bard is getting a rebrand

  • And more.

Following the success of OpenAI's GPT Store, Hugging Face has developed its version. The open source startup has introduced "Hugging Face Assistants," enabling users to create personalised AI chatbots with specific functions in just two clicks.

What sets it apart from OpenAI's offering is that users can select which open source language model will power their AI assistant, with options ranging from Mistral's Mixtral to Meta's Llama 2. Another highlight is that the service is completely free and doesn't require subscriptions, so anyone can access the assistant once it's shared. Are you willing to give it a try?

Maths can be a difficult territory for AI models due to the massive data requirements for solving most equations. That's why researchers from IBM and MIT have introduced "Physics-enhanced deep surrogate (PEDS) models."

This approach combines neural networks and scientific models to address challenging mathematical problems with significantly reduced training data, potentially aiding fields that involve complex systems, such as weather forecasts, carbon capture, and nuclear reactors.

When the race for artificial intelligence began, many questioned Apple's position. Unlike its rivals, such as Microsoft and Google, the company has remained on the sidelines when it comes to introducing AI into its products (despite being familiar with the term). However, that is about to change.

Tim Cook recently announced that Apple would reveal details of its ongoing work on AI later this year, confirming growing rumours that the company is preparing to defy expectations at WWDC in June. This move could put them in the lead once and for all.

📵 The growing impact of AI has prompted Huawei to change its focus. Reports reveal that the company is slowing down the production of its premium Mate 60 phones, redirecting all its efforts to AI chip development.

👋 Are we bidding farewell to Bard? A leaked document on X suggests so. Google is planning to revamp its AI chatbot with a major name change: Gemini. This makes sense as it unifies all of Google's current AI efforts. Plus, it's been revealed that a Gemini app is also in the works.
