Karpathy leaves OpenAI (again!), Nvidia’s Chat with RTX, ChatGPT gets a digital memory

Recalling past conversations is now possible.

Hello, Starters!

For some, love is in the air, and for those of us who are completely head over heels with AI, there's a lot of breaking news. What a treat, right?

Here’s what you’ll find today:

  • Andrej Karpathy parts ways with OpenAI

  • Nvidia unveils Chat with RTX

  • ChatGPT gets a memory feature

  • US confirms AI can’t hold patents

  • Apple presents “Keyframer”

  • And more.

AI researcher Andrej Karpathy announced through a post on X that he's leaving OpenAI to pursue personal projects, pointing out that the departure is unrelated to any issue or event. This marks the second time he has parted ways with the company, as he left to join Tesla in 2017 and then rejoined in 2022.

Karpathy is one of OpenAI's founding members and a prominent figure in the computer science and AI community, thanks to his vision and academic work, which includes writings and popular YouTube videos that explain AI in detail.

Nvidia is entering the world of chatbots in a different way than usual. They've recently announced Chat with RTX, a demo that allows users to create a customised chatbot with their data and run it locally on Windows PCs powered by Nvidia RTX.

This groundbreaking tool eliminates the need to manually search through documents. Users can simply ask the chatbot any queries related to their local files, and Chat with RTX will provide an answer. They can also add YouTube videos and playlists for context. As it runs locally, the data stays on the device and can be accessed without an internet connection.

ChatGPT now remembers past conversations thanks to a new feature. This "memory" helps the chatbot gain context about recurring topics and respond appropriately based on that knowledge.

For example, if you've instructed it to remember that you suffer from allergies, it will consider this the next time you ask for a recipe that contains an allergenic ingredient.

While chatbots typically refrain from storing personal information due to privacy concerns, OpenAI has clarified that users have full control over the topics ChatGPT remembers, and the system avoids storing sensitive data.

🍎Apple continues to drop hints about its ongoing work in AI research, with "Keyframer" being one of the latest revelations. This AI tool leverages LLMs to animate static images based on natural language prompts, streamlining animators' work and possibly being added to products such as the iPad and Vision Pro.

📄As we get more used to AI in our daily lives, the need for guidelines grows. The US Patent and Trademark Office has reinstated that AI cannot be an inventor and that any use of AI tools in the process of creating an invention must be disclosed by the person seeking a patent.
