Microsoft unveils Phi-3, Zuckerberg’s $10B AI model, Adobe’s AI push

It’s time for pocket-size models.

Hello, Starters!

Smaller models continue to be a trend. They are cost-effective, use less computing power, and are easily customizable. We'll be seeing them everywhere, from our laptops to our phones... mark our words!

Here’s what you’ll find today:

  • Phi-3: Microsoft’s smallest AI model

  • Is Zuckerberg willing to open source a $10B model?

  • Adobe presents its Firefly 3 model

  • Tiktok may clone your voice with AI

  • Apple’s upcoming on-device LLM

  • And more.

Microsoft has welcomed Phi-3, its smallest AI model to date and a predecessor to Phi-2, launched in December. Phi-3 Mini measures 3.8 billion parameters, with performance almost on par with similar compact models such as Mixtral 8x7B and GPT-3.5.

Phi-3 Mini is part of a family of models, with Phi-3 Small and Phi-3 Medium being more capable. Smaller models are appealing to enterprises looking to customise them with their data since they are more affordable and don't require a lot of computing power.

Mark Zuckerberg is committed to pushing Meta into the final lap of the AI race, especially with their focus on open source. In a recent interview, the CEO claimed that he expects to completely open-source a $10 billion AI model, but only if it passes safety tests and proves useful.

From Meta's perspective, open source democratises access to AI, fostering development, ensuring safety, and reducing dependency on companies, allowing developers to launch their innovations on their terms.

Adobe is helping designers out with its new Firefly 3 model, which powers various GenAI tools in Photoshop. The most relevant one is Reference Image, allowing users to upload their images to Photoshop to use as a guide when creating similar elements, saving time and reducing the need for too many prompts.

The announcement also includes other tools to generate backgrounds and enhance details. Adobe encourages responsible AI development by guaranteeing user ownership of the uploaded images and adding a "not for training" tag for authenticity.
