Navigating the Gemini era, Altman's trillion-dollar vision, Perplexity & Vercel team up

Bard? I've never heard of that.

Hello, Starters!

A new week has just arrived, and I must confess that I too have been a bit caught off guard by all the twists and turns of the AI landscape. But worry not! An effort has been made to summarise all the recent events.

Here’s what you’ll find today:

  • Google launches Gemini Ultra

  • Sam Altman plans to build a trillion-dollar AI chip infrastructure

  • Perplexity and Vercel join forces

  • Huawei's take on AGI

  • Brilliant Labs presents its AI glasses

  • And more.

Google has finally bid Bard farewell by rebranding it as “Gemini” to unify its family of foundation models. They've also introduced Gemini Ultra, claiming it as their most capable large language model, and like any powerful experience, it can only be accessed through a subscription.

For Android users, the Gemini app is being launched, and for iOS, it will be integrated into the Google app. It's important to note that users who want to try Gemini Ultra 1.0 must first opt for Gemini Advanced through the Google One AI Premium Plan, and as expected, most of Google's products will soon be powered by the model's capabilities.

Weeks of rumours have been confirmed by a post from Sam Altman on X, stating that the world requires "more AI infrastructure," and that OpenAI aims to help. This explains why the CEO has been looking for potential partnerships with chipmakers and investors, a move that's set to transform how the AI scene has been developing so far.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Altman envisions raising five to seven trillion US dollars to address the global AI chip shortage, an amount that surpasses the current sales of the entire chip industry. Among Altman's possible supporters of this ambitious plan are the government of the United Arab Emirates and Taiwan's TSMC.

Perplexity has a specific goal in mind: to achieve the level of giants like Microsoft and Google with its AI search engine. To sustain these efforts, the startup has announced a partnership with the web development platform Vercel.

Through this collaboration, developers using Vercel can integrate Perplexity's LLMs into their applications as a knowledge support system. This isn't the startup's first partnership with another AI company. As part of their strategy to expand into the industry, they've previously collaborated with names like ElevenLabs, Arc, and Rabbit.

👤Researchers from Huawei have recently shared their perspective on general artificial intelligence, primarily focusing on Embodied AI. They believe that a key aspect of reaching AGI is giving AI a "body" to interact with the real world, as it would enhance its abilities and understanding of data.

👓 Brilliant Labs has proudly launched Frame, a pair of glasses powered by a multimodal AI assistant named "Noa," capable of running GPT-4, Stability AI, and Whisper AI. The company expects this groundbreaking device to redefine how we interact in our daily lives.
