OpenAI partners with Reddit, Intel’s Aurora Supercomputer, Microsoft’s climate challenge

OpenAI is serious about data.

Hello, Starters!

Surprise! Maybe you're not used to finding us around on Fridays, but that's about to change. We'll be seeing each other more often, and don't fret! The AI updates will remain the same. We're still learning together.

Here’s what you’ll find today:

  • OpenAI and Reddit have reached a training data deal

  • Intel claims Aurora is the fastest AI supercomputer

  • Microsoft’s AI focus threatens its climate goals

  • China is Tesla’s AI partner

  • Get ready for Microsoft Build 2024

  • And more.

The pursuit of valuable training data continues for OpenAI, and they've reached what could be considered one of their most significant deals yet by partnering with Reddit. In exchange for upcoming "AI-powered" features to enhance user experience, Reddit will grant access to its content.

What sets this deal apart is Reddit's extensive archive spanning nearly two decades of conversations between people. This kind of data is highly desired by AI companies, primarily for its authenticity, which can significantly improve AI models and their understanding of human behaviour.

Intel, in collaboration with Argonne National Laboratory and Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE), has announced that the Aurora supercomputer has broken the exascale barrier at 1.012 exaflops. "Flops" are a way to measure how many calculations a computer can do in one second, and "Exa" means a quintillion. With this in mind, we're talking about Aurora currently being the fastest AI system in the world dedicated to open science, achieving 10.6 AI exaflops.

This breakthrough positions Aurora as a major asset for researchers, enabling advancements in scientific discovery, drug design, and other innovations.

While racing to become one of the main companies in the AI landscape, Microsoft is indirectly breaking a pledge it made in 2020. Back then, one of their goals was to become carbon-negative by the end of the decade. This was an ambitious objective, yet very mindful of global climate challenges. As they continue to invest in AI, training models, and building data centres, they're failing to meet their own expectations, as their greenhouse gas emissions are increasing.

Sustainability is still a complex field in the world of AI. Since it consumes a huge amount of energy, companies are still searching for ways to advance development without affecting the climate. However, there are still no definitive solutions.
