Proxy-tuning, Robots read braille, NYT’s new AI team

AI is finding its place in the newsroom.

Welcome to your AI journey!

We’re almost reaching the end of the week, but that doesn’t mean we’re running out of things to learn about. In AI, a lot can happen in the blink of an eye!

Here’s what you’ll find today:

  • Improve LLMs via Proxy-Tuning

  • AI-powered Robot reads braille

  • The New York Times builds an AI team

  • Stellantis plans ChatGPT integration

  • Samsung’s AI features won’t be free for long

  • And a lot more.

Proxy-tuning is a novel method that easily adapts LLMs without changing their weights. It has been making waves among researchers because it improves the training of resource-intensive models or when access to their weights is unavailable.

This approach revolves around finetuning smaller LLMs to obtain the outputs we require from the target LLM. Think about a matryoshka doll; the small model is nested within a larger one, and its knowledge or abilities will contribute to enhancing the capabilities of the latter.

A robot that can read Braille faster than humans has been developed by researchers from the University of Cambridge, utilizing innovative machine learning algorithms to assist the robot's fingertip camera in "deblurring" images before recognizing letters.

This research not only showcases the influence of AI on modern robotics developments but also addresses a longstanding engineering challenge: attempting to replicate the sensitivity of human fingertips.

The New York Times is rethinking the application of AI in its newsroom by assembling a team of experts to explore how it can enhance reports and the publication's presentation to readers. Nevertheless, they stress that the Times' work will always be carried out by humans.

The use of AI in the media is still in its early stages. Despite this, major names in the field, such as Politico, Axel Springer, and Business Insider, have already taken steps to figure out how to make the best use of it in journalism.

🚗 Following in Volkswagen and Mercedes' footsteps, Stellantis has announced its plans to add ChatGPT to improve the voice assistant in Peugeot vehicles. France, Britain, Germany, Italy, and Spain are the countries selected for the pilot version of this service.

📲 After introducing the Galaxy S24, Samsung has stated that they aim to monetize more powerful features for users who want to access all the full capabilities of the AI-infused smartphone. Free functions will remain available for those who don't want to stretch their budgets.
