Is SearchGPT happening?, OpenAI’s Media Manager, Apple’s AI-driven M4 chip

There may be a transformation in web search.

Hello, Starters!

This Wednesday, we're following OpenAI's trail. Of course, it's something we usually do daily since it's one of the main leaders in the AI field. But for now, it appears they have something in hand for the upcoming week.

Here’s what you’ll find today:

  • “SearchGPT” may be launched soon

  • OpenAI plans to release a Media Manager tool in 2025

  • Apple presents its AI-optimised M4 chip

  • Microsoft’s offline AI for US intelligence

  • A DALL-E 3 image detector is in the works

  • And more.

Several sources claim that OpenAI is close to launching a new web product: a search engine. The rumours started due to code changes noticed by insiders, in addition to the change of ChatGPT's domain name to "chatgpt.com." This search product might resemble Perplexity, offering citations and answering with images if necessary.

They've also pointed out that the launch may take place next Monday, alongside the announcement of the mysterious GPT2 bots that have been making waves in the LMSYS arena. These bots are now completely linked to OpenAI, thanks to a recent post made by Sam Altman on X.

Giving more control back to creators, OpenAI has also announced a tool called "Media Manager," set to be released next year. With this tool, content owners can decide which of their works can be used for research and training the company's models.

However, OpenAI emphasises that this is not a complete solution, as creators don't have full knowledge of all the pages where their creations are shared due to reposts, screenshots, or remixes. Yet, they hope this step sets a standard in the AI industry, especially in contexts such as data scraping, which have generated mixed opinions.

While the tech world eagerly anticipates its AI endeavours, Apple has introduced its new iPad Pro, powered by the company's latest M4 chip, designed with a strong focus on handling AI tasks and featuring a larger "neural engine."

Apple usually announces new chips with their Mac lineups, so this sudden change is quite unexpected. It has been said that this is a strategic move, as they want to put the power of the M4 chip in the hands of app makers to try before their annual WWDC, a pivotal moment we've all been waiting for as Apple becomes more prominent in the AI race.

🕵️Microsoft is working closely with US intelligence agencies on the deployment of a genAI model, based on GPT-4, to help reduce workloads and answer queries about classified information. Due to the nature of the data managed, this model is isolated from the internet and doesn't learn from the files it's trained on.

🖼️OpenAI has presented a tool focusing on responsible AI development that detects whether an image was made with DALL-E 3, alongside a series of watermarking methods that flag its content. According to the company, detection works even when images are cropped or changed, with 98 percent accuracy.
