Unlocking light-speed AI, Introducing Bioptimus, Deutsche Telekom’s AI phone

A call from AI just came in.

Hello, Starters!

AI development is all about speed, and surprisingly enough, some of them are progressing at the speed of light. We might not be as fast, of course, but we'll do our best to catch up!

Here’s what you’ll find today:

  • A new chip promises light-speed AI computing

  • Bioptimus: A model for biology

  • Telekom’s AI phone with no apps

  • Adobe presents its AI assistant

  • Gemini business is coming

  • And more.

A group of researchers from the University of Pennsylvania have made a breakthrough in AI development. They've created a silicon-photonic (SiPh) chip that uses light waves instead of electricity to perform the complex mathematical computations required for AI training.

One of the main issues facing AI in this day and age is the amount of energy it consumes during training, which has a significant impact on sustainability. A chip that doesn't rely on electricity may be a turning point for the industry, as it also has the potential to increase the processing speed of computers.

Former Google DeepMind members and Owkin scientists have joined forces to bring Bioptimus to life. This French startup has one goal in mind: to create the first universal foundation model for biology.

They intend to do so by leveraging patient data from academic hospitals, as well as connecting different scales of biology through the use of GenAI. Bioptimus has recently emerged from stealth after securing a significant amount of $35 million in seed funding.

Deutsche Telekom is gearing up to unveil its T phone at this year's Mobile World Congress, aiming to replace apps with an AI assistant. The concept phone integrates technologies from Qualcomm and Brain.ai, designed to simplify users' lives by responding to voice commands and performing tasks as requested.

Smartphones are the next frontier to be greatly influenced by AI, as we've seen with products from Samsung and Google. It won't be long until artificial intelligence is at our fingertips.

📄Adobe is rolling out an AI assistant for its Acrobat and Reader applications, allowing users to explore PDF documents in a whole new way with AI-powered search and summarization. Although many AI models already offer PDF readers, it was about time Adobe added it by default.

💼Continuing its efforts to integrate Gemini across its product lineup, it seems that Google is planning on a "business" and "enterprise" version for Workspace users. The company introduced Duet AI last year, offering a similar function, however, all signs point to Gemini's time to shine.
